- Union Cabinet today approved merger of Union and Railway Budgets.
- Now there will be no separate Railways Budget
- Budget date has also been advanced, now it be presented around February 1st itself
- The entire Budget approval process will be done before March 31st
- The process of presenting separate Railway Budget started in 1924 when British were ruling India
- At that time, Railway Expenditure was higher compared to Union Budget, so separate Railway Budget was done
- But after Independence, the Union Budget expenditure rose with Defence allocation, Highways projects etc
- Now merger is expected to save Rs. 10,000 cr for Raiways
